Today is the official release day on home video for Star Trek (2009) in the US. While choosing Trek for my favorite film of the year was easy, more difficult is picking which Blu-ray set to get.
Best Buy, and a couple others, are offereing the Blu set with four Starfleet insignias. Read the rest of this entry »
Looking to dump your iPod for a “slick” new Zune HD? You might want to check out Five Myths of the Zune HD. All of that cutting edge tech packed into the new Zune might just have a bit too much of an edge. Yea, the link takes you to an Apple-oriented site, but do you really think a website run by Microsoft fanboys is going to give any (real) negative commentary to the first Zune to get any potential respect? Either way, it’s an interesting read. I welcome the new Zune and some of its features – it might bring some competition for Apple, which will benefit consumers on the iPod front.
Of course the Zune isn’t going to get much love from Mac users in the short term, as it’s not compatible, though workaround’s are already cropping up. And app-wise the Zune has a long, long way to go to catch up with the App Store, though some of the announced games and Xbox 360 connectability sound exciting.
Check out the Zune HD 32 Tech Specs here.

I’m amazed at the overall lackluster Blu-ray titles released month-after-month. In a given week, there are maybe an average of 15+ titles, mostly made up of “B” films (if we are lucky) and a plethora of movies I have never heard of or not going to fork over $25-$35 for. Come on! – a premium format at a premium price should have a premium library.
But I am happy to see things changing. Looking at the 2009 release schedule, hardly a week goes by I don’t see a few choice titles come up. Last fall the 007 catalog started trickling through with 3 random titles released at a time individually or grouped in 3-box set. And The Dark Knight
was given special treatment available with a bonus disk and Batpod miniature.

There are two major complaints I have had for many years in the world of gadgets.
1. Why do so many portable devices have to use unique batteries?
2. Why can’t mobile phones all use the same connector and charger?
Someone out there heard me, at least for question #2. The GSMA trade association announced at its 2009 Mobile World Congress this month that the leading handset manufacturers have agreed on a cell phone charging standard. The target date for implementation is set to appear by Jan 1st, 2012, when most cell phones will use the same charger and micro USB connector. All major manufacturers have jumped on board…AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, T-Mobile, and Vodafone, but not Apple (no big surprise there). The charger is also being designed to be energy efficient using 50% less power when left in a power outlet. Because Apple uses their dock to charge the iPhone, it’s understandable they don’t want to change that, so that leaves either an adapter or separate USB connection (which won’t happen). Now will someone in the industry get back to me on the battery thing?
I downloaded this Oct 8, 2008. It’s a free app. The ability and ease to blog on-the-run means I can submit them from wherever I am, or when I get to a cell or wifi connection. Those blogs are mostly updates or shorter blocks of text as I’m not up for cranking out a 2000 word piece of work on a virtual keypad. But it gives me the ability to post thoughts on this site from wherever & whenever instead of at the end of the day, and in more coherent blocks of text then just a Tweet. Though I have a Mac, gaming PC, Wii, 360, PS3, DS, PSP and iPod (and just about every gaming platform back to the Odyssey and Pong) – it’s impossible to play every game that comes along. I don’t
care who you are and if you are gaming 24/7 – you just can’t play them all. (And I know; as publisher of the two leading game magazines at the time, I had access to every game out there, for free.) Another factor to consider in picking the best for your favorite game list is that everyone has categories they favor or dislike. If you kill to play 3rd-person shooters, and would do it all day if you could, what does that have to say about taking a detour to play a sim or (dare I say it) edutainment product? A bit of history first. PDA’s aren’t new to me. Way, way back I had handhelds like the Sharp Wizard, Casio B.O.S.S., the 1st gen Newton, a myriad of Palms, and Sony Clie’s, plus a few others I can’t think of right now. The Clie PEG-NX70v probably ranks as one of my favorite consumer electronics devices of all time, along with the Palm T5 (which ran the newer OS, had wi-fi, via an SD card, and was light & slim). I also have a 1st gen iPod so it’s not like I’m a noob in any of these areas.
After the 1st gen iPod, I picked up a silver iPod mini, but then decided no more iPods until the release of the iPhone. But wait – the iPhone was years away and there weren’t even rumors of it for what seemed like eons. But I imagined what the ultimate PDA would be and it was the iPhone. Apple eventually fulfilled my dream and the iPhone has become my PDA. Read the rest of this entry »
