WELCOME TO THE ALDRICH ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
The Aldrich Astronomical Society is a central Massachusetts-based organization of amateur astronomers that have united to promote their mutual interest in observational astronomy ("stargazing") and telescope making. Members meet on a weekly basis to conduct skywatching sessions (weather permitting) and informal lectures or discussions of current events and topics in astronomy, space science, telescopes, and telescope making.
Founded in 1932, the Society was named in honor of the late Professor Fred Aldrich of Worcester Academy, who was a long time promoter and lecturer of astronomy in the Worcester area. The Society operates and maintains an observatory on a secluded hilltop in Paxton, Massachusetts. The observatory features a 12 1/2 inch Newtonian reflector telescope built by club members. The facility also features a meeting hall and work rooms which may be used for mirror grinding.
In addition to attending observing sessions, the Society sponcors field trips to local astronomical institutions. Members are encouraged to attend local and regional astronomical conventions such as Arunah Hill Days (September 2 - 4, 2000), and Stellafane (August 17-19, 2001).
Visitors are invited to attend Society meetings which are held on Friday eveninigs. New members are solicited. There are no special qualifications for membership; an interest in astronomy is the only prerequisite. Interested individuals are encouraged to call or write a club officer.
